Interesting or useful resources on the web

Below are links to some of the sites I regularly visit, and to some sites I thought were interesting or helpful to artists.

Sites of general interest

Artrenewal.org is an excellent resource for representational artists working in the classical traditions. Among other things, you can find the most complete list of schools and ateliers offering an approximation of classical training in art. Take the divisive anti-Modern rhetoric in this site with a big grain of salt...

The American Society of Classical Realism: News and info on realist art and artists, publishers of the now defunct Classical Realism Journal.

Schools and educational institutions

Charles Cecil Studios : Where I studied and now occasionally teach sculpture (more about this on my bio page). You won't see much sculpture at this web site, but you can get an idea from the examples of painting and drawing what the school's aims are. This school changed my life.

Sarum Studio is the atelier of Nick Beer, portrait painter who also trained under Charles Cecil. His is the only atelier in the UK teaching sight-size portraiture.

Mims Studio : An atelier offering a full-time multi-year curriculum under the direction of Jeffrey Mims in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

Florence academy of Art: Another fine arts academy in Florence, with ideals and methods similar to those of the Charles H. Cecil studio; I find it interesting to compare the differences between the two schools' distinct styles. Doing so highlights the influence of masters upon their students' ways of seeing and rendering in naturalist art.

Galleries and Artists

Galleria Romanelli are dealers of antique and contemporary figurative art in Florence, Italy, run by sculptor Raffaelo Romanelli, in one of the most historic studios in Europe. I also teach a marble carving workshop every July here.

Banksy is probably the most relevant artist working today. I'm a big fan of both his message and his methods. Rarely has an artist handled political art with such succinct aplomb and humor.

Johnson Studio :Lee Johnson is a painter trained at Cecil Studio and is now working in the U.S. Talented and original.

Charles Philip Brooks : A landscape painter in the Barbazon tradition.

Henry Wingate : Portrait painter extraordinaire.

Lavender Hill Studios : Former Charles H. Cecil Studio assistants who recently opened their own atelier in London.

Il Ritratto: Portrait painters and old chums from the Charles H.Cecil Studio.

Ann Long Fine Art : One of the few brick-and-mortar galleries dealing mainly with the art of contemporary American realists.
